Course Outline

Module 1: Fundamentals of Fiber Optics (Applied Focus)
• Principles of optical fiber transmission. • Types of fiber (single-mode vs. multi-mode). • Attenuation, dispersion, and optical loss. • Components of an optical fiber network. • Best practices and safety in fiber work. Practice: • Identification of cable and connector types. • Visual inspection and proper handling of fiber.

Module 2: Fusion Splicing with Fujikura 90S+
• Principles of fusion splicing. • Proper fiber preparation (stripping, cleaning, cutting). • Basic configuration of the Fujikura 90S+ equipment. • Interpretation of splice parameters and results. • Basic maintenance of the equipment. Intensive practices: • Performing fusion splices. • Evaluation of estimated losses. • Correction of common errors. • Organization in trays and closures.
Module 3: Optical Loss Measurement with Power Meter EXFO PX1 / PX1-PRO
• Principles of optical power measurement. • Wavelength configuration. • Combined use of source and meter. • Calculation and interpretation of link loss. Practices: • Measurement of fiber segments. • Recording of results. • Comparison against expected values. • Detection of abnormal losses.

Module 4: Use and Analysis of OTDR – EXFO MaxTester 730C
• Fundamentals of OTDR. • Proper configuration of tests (range, pulse, time). • Interpretation of events in the trace. • Identification of splices, connectors, and breaks. • Measurement of distance to faults. Practices: • Generation of real traces. • Analysis of events. • Identification of macrobends and breaks. • Simulation of controlled faults.

Module 5: Comprehensive Diagnosis and Practical Cases
• Field diagnosis methodology. • Procedure in case of service outage. • Technical documentation of tests. • Best installation practices and basic certification. Final integrative practice: • Complete practical case: installation, splicing, measurement, and diagnosis. • Group analysis of results. • Technical feedback from the instructor
